Sunderland should target Everton striker Oumar Niasse in the January transfer window.

Everton forward Oumar Niasse has been the target of criticism from the Goodison Park faithful for his frustrating displays and perceived lack of effort.

The Senegal international made the move to Merseyside from Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow in February of this year, for a fee believed to be in the region of £13.5 million, but has gone on to make only two Premier League starts for the Toffees.

The 26-year-old appears to be just as much out of favour with current boss Ronald Koeman as he was with previous manger Roberto Martinez, and a move away from the club is surely needed to inject a spark back into his stuttering career.

Despite his struggles at Everton, there is no doubting Niasse’s ability, and he could be a useful option for Sunderland, who are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.

The Wearside outfit have been in woeful form so far this season, and are yet to record a league victory, which has left them two points adrift of 17th placed Swansea City.

David Moyes’ men have managed to score just six goals in seven league games – with four of those coming from Jermain Defoe.

They probably have the weakest attacking options in the Premier League, and the potential acquisition of Niasse would go along way to making them far more of a threat going forward.

Despite his critics, the Everton man possesses pace in abundance, and his direct style of play is exactly what the Black Cats need to help inject some fervour into their attacking play.

Whether or not the Toffees would be open to selling the Senegalese will depend heavily on how much he is used between now an January, but if his situation has not changed by then, Moyes should take a risk on Niasse.

It could be one that helps save both his job, and Sunderland’s season.
