Everton were linked with Villarreal frontman Cedric Bakambu in the summer but West Ham now appear to be the frontrunners.
Only two players have scored more goals in La Liga this season than Villarreal striker Cedric Bakambu – Lionel Messi and, perhaps less predictably, Simone Zaza.
Congolese hitman Bakambu has recovered from an injury hit 2016/17 and is already on track to comfortably exceed his impressive debut campaign with Villarreal from two years ago.
Bakambu is quick, confident and ruthless, netting eight goals in ten starts and scoring a first-ever La Liga hat-trick against Eibar – not to mention outscoring Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez, Karim Benzema, Iago Aspas and Aritz Aduriz.
It should come as no surprise that a Villarreal side used to creating and selling top class centre-forwards are facing a challenging to hang onto their star man. Calciomercato report that West Ham want Bakambu but face competition from Premier League rivals West Brom.
The 26-year-old would be a fine welcoming present for new Hammers boss David Moyes. Naturally fast and blessed with power and dead-eyed finishing, Bakambu looks like the sort of striker who should take to the Premier League like a duck to water.
But Everton fans should be a little concerned that they are omitted from Calciomercato’s report. After all, The Sun claimed in the summer that The Toffees saw the £25 million striker as a possible replacement for Romelu Lukaku.
And after a disastrous start to the season in which Everton have scored just 10 goals in 11 league games, The Toffees need Bakambu more than ever.
Needless to say, after missing out on countless quality strikers in the summer, Bakambu joining West Ham over Everton does not bare thinking about.
