The Toffees midfielder has become the highest-scoring Icelandic player in the English top flight ahead of Eidur Gudjohnsen.
Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has spoken out after his goals in the 3-0 win over Cardiff City on Tuesday night helped him break a Premier League record.
The Iceland international scored a goal in each half, first sweeping home Seamus Coleman’s cut-back from the right following a throw-in, and then netting on the rebound after Bernard’s effort had been deflected into his path.
Sigurdsson’s brace took his tally to 12 goals in all competitions this term and 57 Premier League goals in total, which has made him the highest-scoring Icelandic player in Premier League history, eclipsing Chelsea legend Eidur Gudjohnsen on 55.
Speaking after the game, which saw Everton go up to ninth on 36 points, the 29-year-old is quoted by The Mirror as saying: “I knew that. I’d been waiting to get that. I am very proud.
“When I was growing up, he was the one I was watching. I wanted to be like him and play in the Premier League. Hopefully he’ll give me a text. It’s fantastic to have finally gone over him.”
Sigurdsson became Everton’s club record signing when he joined from Swansea City in 2017 for a fee believed to be about £45m (BBC Sport) and has clocked up 64 appearances for the Toffees, scoring 18 goals and registering nine assists (Transfermarkt).
