According to A Bola, Everton are interested in Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes, but at £35 million the transfer would require a u-turn from Marcel Brands.

Everton are thought to be keen on the Portuguese attacking midfielder, who has looked like a bright prospect at Lisbon.

But Brands’ past comments about bringing Hirving Lozano to Goodison Park look relevant again, unless he has had a complete change of heart.

”If Lozano would cost £20 million, I would consider it, but at higher rates we are looking at players who have already proven it in the Premier League or in another big league,” Brands said to the Liverpool Echo last month, when Everton were linked with Lozano.

Fernandes surely fits into the same category of player as Lozano, so for Everton to invest £35 million into him would be a colossal gamble.

Portugal's midfielder Bruno Fernandes stands prior to the international friendly football match between Portugal and Netherlands at Stade de Geneve stadium in Geneva on March 26, 2018.

Fernandes looks to be an exciting talent, but he has failed to really prove himself outside of Portugal.

The playmaker may well have caught the attention of Everton’s scouts, with plenty of clubs across Europe now looking at him.

But for Everton to actually sign him, Brands will have to make an exception, otherwise the current price over his head looks far too expensive for the Toffees to pay.
