The Welshman has been poor at Everton this season.

Everton’s woeful season hit rock-bottom on Thursday night, as they were defeated by Italian side Atalanta 5-1 at Goodison Park. The Toffees have been dreadful in Europe this term, but this performance was perhaps their worst of the season so far.

Many players had their displays questioned after the game, with Michael Keane in particular heavily criticised. But it was the man next to him, Ashley Williams, who again had an awful display. The Welshman has been poor for Everton all season and the Toffees need to bring in centre-back reinforcements this January to get themselves out of trouble.

In order to do so, maybe it’s best Williams is moved on. With that in mind, perhaps Everton should try tempt Celtic into buying him. Celtic are after a new central defender, and Reading’s Liam Moore has been linked with a move to the club in recent weeks.

Williams however would surely be a more attractive target for Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers. He worked with the defender during his successful spell at Swansea City and tried to bring him to Liverpool whilst manager at Anfield.

Williams has been in poor form for Everton, but given the standard of Scottish football Williams would thrive at Celtic Park.

At 33-years-old, his next move will likely be his last in the game and playing for Celtic could allow Williams to extend his career more than if he stayed in England – where his advancing years are clearly starting to have a detrimental impact on his performances.

A move to Celtic for Williams could be for the best for the player, the Bhoys and Everton.
