The German has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, but Everton should gatecrash the party.

Toffees boss Ronald Koeman has already been extremely busy in the transfer market this summer, spending well in excess of £100 million by bringing in a whole host of new signings.

With Everton recouping nearly all of their outgoings by selling Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, however, the Dutchman will still have plenty of funds with which to play with.

The Blues still need to strengthen in the attacking midfield and wide areas, with Yannick Bolasie still in the rehabilitation stage of his recovery from injury, Aaron Lennon’s ongoing personal problems, and Ross Barkley’s future far from certain.

The Toffees are expected to demand at least £25 million for the 23-year-old England international, according to the Mirror.

That would represent fantastic value for the club, with just 12 months remaining on Barkley’s current deal, and they should make their business even more impressive by challenging Spurs and Liverpool for Schalke’s young star Max Meyer.

The 21-year-old German is one of the most highly sought-after prospects on the continent, and is available for the meagre fee of just £17 million, according to German media outlet Bild.

The talented youngster would be the ideal addition to Koeman’s squad, what with his exceptional ability on the ball and unrivalled technique, for a player so young.

He is versatile in the extreme, and can play anywhere along the front-line, as well as every position across midfield.

He is perhaps most effective, however, when utilised in the number 10 role behind the lone striker, and although Wayne Rooney will surely be Koeman’s first choice in that particular position, Meyer would provide fantastic competition for the former Manchester United man.

And if Koeman does manage to bring the Germany international to Goodison Park, in place of Barkley, it could turn out to be the final piece of the jigsaw for Everton.
