Everton should pull out of Adrien Silva race and let Tottenham Hotspur sign him

Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva in the summer transfer window.

O Jogo has credited the Toffees with interest in the Portugal international, while Sport Witness has cited Record as claiming that the Merseyside outfit have submitted an initial offer of €25 million (£22.13m) which has been rejected.

Silva is a very good midfielder and has extensive experience of playing football at the highest level. The Sporting star also helped Portugal win the European Championship in France last summer.

No one is doubting the quality of the 28-year-old, but do Everton actually need him, especially for over £25m?

According to Portugal newspaper Jornal de Noticas (printed edition, page 53, June 20, 2017), Sporting are seeking around €30m (£26.5m) for Silva (click here to read more).

With Spurs also interested, according to the report, the Portuguese giants have no reason to reduce their asking price, as a bidding war would suit them just fine.

Everton have made a number of signings so far this summer, attacking midfielder Davy Klaassen being one of them.

Among the midfielders that manager Ronald Koeman now has at Goodison Park are Morgan Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gueye and Ross Barkley. Wayne Rooney can also operate in midfield, while Tom Davies’s performances last season suggest that he could establish himself in the first team sooner rather than later.

The Toffees do not lack in midfielders, and it would make no sense for the Merseyside outfit to sign Silva. Even if Koeman’s side progress to the group stage of the Europa League next season, Everton have enough midfielders to cope with the fixtures.

Tottenham do not need Silva either, as they have enough good and promising midfielders, such as Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Dele Alli. It is hard to see the Portuguese break into the Spurs first team rightaway.

However, if Spurs are willing to cough up the £26.5m that Sporting reportedly want, then Everton should just let them make that mistake and pull out of the race.
