Tottenham Hotspur, Watford and Bournemouth are all tracking Eredivisie starlet Bergwijn – but Everton arguably need him the most.
With Everton still failing to spark this season under Ronald Koeman, questions have inevitably arose about the club’s summer recruitment.
The Toffees spent around £140 million in the summer, an unprecedented fee for the club, in order to close the gap of the Premier League’s big six. Instead, however, all their opulent outlay has achieved is eight points, and five goals, from nine domestic fixtures.
In the dire 1-1 draw with Brighton at the weekend, Everton once again were punished for a lack of width. So far this season, Koeman has left natural, chalk-booted wingers like Kevin Mirallas and Aaron Lennon on the sidelines in favour of shoehorning as many number tens into his starting XI as possible.
Everton need something different. Something like Steven Bergwijn. While throwing money at the problem is not necessarily the right way to go, PSV’s fleet-footed winger is exactly the kind of player who could make the difference on Merseyside.
Bergwijn, who was nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy award recently, is a speedy, direct and talented winger who thrives in taking full-backs on head-to-head. In short, he is exactly the kind of maverick wideman who could add a dash of unpredictability, creativity and pace to a one-dimensional Everton attack.

Whether he’s the second coming of Arjen Robben or merely the new Memphis Depay remains to be seen but anyone who watched his Messi-esque wondergoal in the recent 7-1 thrashing of Utrecht will tell you that the boy has talent.
