Everton should prioritise strengthening their defensive options this summer, and are reportedly keen on Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles.

According to a report from the Chronicle during the week, Everton are amongst the Premier League sides keeping tabs on Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles.

Lascelles has been excellent for the Magpies over the last couple of years, captaining them to promotion and proving to be just as influential a leader in the top flight as he had been in the Championship.

The Chronicle reports that the Toffees are monitoring his situation, but they face competition from the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal for the £35,000 a week defender.

But given the quality and leadership that the 24-year-old has shown during his time at St James’ Park, Everton should surely look to do all they can to make sure that they are the team to win the race to sign Lascelles in the summer.

Sam Allardyce, Manager of Everton during the Premier League match between Everton and Huddersfield Town at Goodison Park on December 2, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

The Toffees have been poor defensively this season. And while they have players who appear to have plenty of potential – the likes of Mason Holgate and Jonjoe Kenny look destined for bright futures – they also have a number of players whose form this term suggests that they may be reaching the twilight of their careers.

Lascelles is reaching an age where he should be set to now enjoy the peak years of his career, and that would make him an excellent addition to Everton’s ranks given the ability that he is already showing for the Magpies.

Although Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka have both been under-par this term, they appear to be leaders in the Toffees side and that may be one of the reasons why Sam Allardyce is hesitant to start relying on them less often.

But with Lascelles showing with Newcastle that he is a leader, it would appear that he would tick many of the boxes for Everton should they make a move at the end of the season.
