Should Everton consider a swoop for Tottenham Hotspur’s Kevin Wimmer?
Kevin Wimmer has admitted that he is frustrated at Tottenham Hotspur following a lack of first-team chances.
His comments will be music to the ears of many-a-manager, given his performances last season, but will Everton boss Ronald Koeman be one of them? If not, he should be.
The Austrian centre-back is stuck behind Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in the pecking order at Tottenham and, on current form, those two will take some shifting.
But he did prove a very useful deputy for a number of months last season when Vertonghen was injured.
He was so competent, in fact, that at the time it looked rather harsh when Mauricio Pochettino removed him immediately when his Belgian team-mate fully recovered.
His frustration is understandable, but fortunately for him, there are many clubs who need an excellent centre-back – and Everton are still one of them.
The Toffees’ centre-backs Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka, at a combined age of 66, have done well so far, with Everton’s defence conceding five times in seven Premier League games – only Tottenham have conceded less.
But those two are not a viable long-term option for Koeman. At 23, Wimmer is.
Koeman spent the final month of the transfer window in pursuit of Sunderland’s Lamine Kone, with the Black Cats knocking back an £18 million bid.
The Mirror reported in August that £20 million would be needed to prise him from the North East, but the Dutch manager should consider using that for the Spurs man instead.
