Everton fans have been left wondering whether Memphis Depay is heading to Merseyside after the club tweeted about him this evening.
Netherlands avoided a scare as they beat Luxembourg 3-1 in their 2018 World Cup qualifier this evening – and Everton sent a bizarre message on Twitter about Memphis Depay’s performance.
Danny Blind’s side drew 1-1 in a friendly with neighbours Belgium on Wednesday evening, as Davy Klaassen’s penalty was cancelled out by Yannick Ferreira Carrasco’s equaliser.

Tonight though, it was back to competitive action as the Netherlands took on Luxembourg, looking to keep the pressure on Group A leaders France – and they avoided a minor scare to claim the win.
After Arjen Robben had put the Dutch in front, Maxime Chanot equalised from the penalty spot to make life a little more difficult for Blind’s side, but Manchester United outcast Memphis Depay hit two second half goals to seal a 3-1 victory.

Depay, 22, has gone from United’s boy wonder following his 2015 move from PSV Eindhoven to a complete misfit under Jose Mourinho, as the winger has started just one game in all competitions this season, and played just 20 minutes of Premier League football.
Many think that Depay could leave Old Trafford in January, and the Liverpool Echo claim that Everton are keen to land the wide man as boss Ronald Koeman is a big fan of his compatriot.
Today, Koeman confirmed to FOX Sports Netherlands that he would like to have Depay at his disposal as he thinks the winger is ‘an interesting player’ – and Everton’s official Twitter account has only added to the rumours with a surprise message this evening.
Memphis Depay celebrates scoring against Luxembourg
Everton tweeted to update fans on how Yannick Bolasie was faring, as DR Congo were losing 1-0 in Guinea, before noting that transfer target Depay had scored against Luxembourg – an interesting message given the rumours surrounding club and player.
The message sparked interest from Everton fans, who were left wondering why the Toffees had tweeted so openly about a transfer target, and were left wondering whether a deal has already been agreed to send Depay to Merseyside in 2017.
The most likely reason for the message is that Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was in goal for the Netherlands, and as they were updating fans on his progress, Depay’s goal was a mere coincidence, and they’d have tweeted a similar message no matter who scored.
However, the message will only add fuel to the fire that Depay could be on his way to Goodison Park in January, where he would be able to join up with compatriots Koeman and Stekelenburg.
