Everton coasted to a 3-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon – and took their chance to poke some fun at Paul Merson.

The Toffees saw a three-game winning run come to an end at Manchester United last weekend, and Marco Silva will have been desperate for a positive response back at Goodison Park.

He saw his side take the lead as a flowing counter-attack saw Gylfi Sigurdsson pick out Richarlison to smash home the opener, before Lewis Dunk headed in an equaliser for the Seagulls.

Seamus Coleman drove Everton back in front with his first goal in more than 18 months, and Richarlison pounced on a loose pass from Dunk to nip past Shane Duffy and go around goalkeeper Mat Ryan before sliding the ball in.

Everton have now won four of their last five Premier League games, and look to be making real progress under Silva – especially with Richarlison in such fine form in attack.

Eyebrows were raised when Everton splashed out £40million to land the Brazilian from Watford over the summer, reuniting him with Silva having worked together at Vicarage Road last season.

Richarlison now has six goals in nine Premier League games for Everton, and those who criticised the Toffees for signing him in such a big deal have been left with egg on their faces.

Everton took the opportunity to hammer that home, sending a comical Twitter message to pundit Paul Merson on Saturday after Richarlison’s second goal, as Merson famously suggested that Richarlison’s deal ‘spoiled’ the transfer window – and Everton certainly want him to see just how well the forward is playing.
