The Everton defender will remain on loan at Sunderland until the summer.
Chris Coleman has told the Northern Echo that Sunderland tried to send Brendan Galloway back to Everton in January – but the Premier League side refused.
Galloway moved to Sunderland on a season-long loan last summer, when Simon Grayson was in charge at the Stadium of Light.
Grayson has since been replaced by Coleman, however, in which time Galloway has made just two first team appearances totaling 42 minutes of football.
And with the deadline for transfers having passed last week, the 21-year-old’s loan can no longer be terminated, which suggests his struggle looks set to continue.
Coleman said of the Everton loanee: “Brendan is a lovely kid and he has been working hard but he has lacked game time. He’s here to get game time and he is not getting it.
“You don’t want to waste the boy’s time, it is a critical stage for him. We thought maybe Everton would want to take him back, maybe loan him out somewhere else – even in the division below – but that wasn’t the case.
“So Brendan is still here, and he is a cracking boy. Who knows, we may need to call on him yet.”
Galloway moved to Everton three-and-a-half years ago from Milton Keynes Dons, and was linked with a return there last month.
The Zimbabwe-born left-back-cum-central-defender had an unsuccessful spell at West Bromwich Albion before moving to Sunderland.
In terms of game time, Galloway’s Everton teammate Tyias Browning has fared far better at Sunderland – making 25 appearances in all competitions since the start of his temporary move.
