Everton are reportedly pursuing a number of left backs ahead of the summer transfer window.
Everton are set to pursue a new left back this summer – and they are being linked with two players to fill that role.
The Toffees have somehow failed to bring in a left back in the last two transfer windows, meaning they have been left without proven cover for the ageing Leighton Baines.
Cuco Martina filled in to the best of his abilities, but with Luke Garbutt and Brendan Galloway struggling to fulfil their potential, it’s imperative that Everton sign a new left back this summer.
The Sun now report that Everton are lining up a £25million move for West Ham United left back Aaron Cresswell, in the hope of bringing the Liverpudlian back to Merseyside.
However, Cresswell turns 29 later this year, and Everton would risk being in a similar situation in two or three years time, in that they would need to replace their left back over the age of 30.
Everton should instead be looking to invest in a talent young left back who can offer immediate cover for Baines whilst being able to step in down the line – and Bristol City’s Joe Bryan makes perfect sense.
According to The Sunday People (print edition, page 48, March 18, 2018), Everton are interested in snapping up Bryan this summer, and Bristol City’s fading Championship play-off hopes may just play into Everton’s hands.
Bryan is just 24, and has shown his attacking prowess with five goals and three assists this season, including the winning goal in the Carabao Cup against Manchester United back in December, whilst his pace and energy would make him the ideal Baines replacement.
Everton have invested too much money in players around the age of 30, such as Ashley Williams, Yannick Bolasie, Theo Walcott and Wayne Rooney, so rather than repeating that approach by signing Cresswell, Everton should look to Bryan first.
