Everton have parted ways with Rafael Benitez today – and Fabrizio Romano claims there are just two candidates being targeted to replace him.

Everton were beaten 2-1 at Norwich City on Saturday afternoon having fallen 2-0 down to a Michael Keane own goal and an Adam Idah strike.

The Toffees did grab one back with a Richarlison goal, but it wasn’t enough to get anything from the game.

It also wasn’t enough for Benitez to keep his job, with Everton today choosing to sack the Spaniard despite only appointing him in the summer.

After just two wins in the last 15 Premier League games, Benitez has gone – much to the joy of many Everton fans.

So who on earth is going to replace Benitez at Everton?

Well, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to share what he’s heard about Everton’s managerial search.

Romano claims that Everton are considering just two potential candidates to replace Benitez as things stand.

Romano didn’t elaborate on who those two candidates are, meaning Everton’s search is shrouded in mystery right now.

One name you can imagine will be in the mix is Roberto Martinez, who was actually sacked by Everton back in 2016.

Martinez had a mixed three years at Everton, playing exciting attacking football but suffering from being far too open defensively.

Bringing back Martinez would surely be a Bill Kenwright move rather than a Farhad Moshiri one, and Everton fans may not be so eager to see Martinez return.

Another name you can imagine being in the running is former Everton hero Wayne Rooney.

Rooney is working miracles at Derby County right now, taking them off the foot of the table despite a 21-point deduction.

It may be early for Rooney to take the Everton job, but Farhad Moshiri may think he can get fans back on side with such a move.

Duncan Ferguson is another contender as he prepares to be caretaker boss once again, with Everton no doubt hoping for a quick appointment.
