The Toffees goalkeeper has received some criticism this season.
Despite a number of errors this season which have prompted some criticism, Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been called up to the England squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.
The 25-year-old was impressive for the Three Lions at the 2018 World Cup, helping Gareth Southgate’s charges to the semi-finals in Russia, but this term he has found himself under the spotlight on several occasions.
Against Newcastle United in the Premier League last weekend, Pickford brought Salomon Rondon down in the first half after fumbling a cross from Matt Ritchie and was arguably lucky not to have been sent off.
Although he kept out Matt Ritchie’s penalty, later on he spilled Miguel Almiron’s shot into the path of Ayoze Perez, who scored to equalise and, from having been two goals up, the Toffees eventually fell to a 3-2 defeat.
That error was Pickford’s fourth leading to an opposition goal this season and seventh error leading to either a shot or a goal, both higher than any other player in the Premier League this term (BBC Sport).
Nonetheless, he has made the cut for the latest England squad, being selected alongside Jack Butland of Stoke City and Tom Heaton of Burnley, but some Everton fans weren’t too pleased and spoke out on Twitter:
