Everton are outperforming Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Liverpool in creating chances so far this season.

It has been a deflating start to the season for supporters of Everton, who were hoping to see the side make a repeat of last campaign.

Roberto Martinez’s side won plaudits all across the country last year for the attacking style they showed in their play, as the lifted themselves to a fifth placed finish in the Premier League.

It was a brilliant campaign, masterminded by the Spaniard, and, after heavy investment, many expected them to go one better this time around.

However, after seven matches, the Toffees are languishing down in 17th place with just one win to their name.

A collection of draws of defeats have meant that they already have some catching up to do if they are to emulate last season’s finish and concerns have been raised about the way the side are playing.

Even so, optimism should be taken from the fact that they are still showing their attacking qualities.

Although confidence cannot be high at Goodison Park at the moment, Martinez’s side have still made 12 openings so far this campaign, which is a total which surpasses those of fellow European football chasers Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Liverpool.

It shows that an up-turn in form should not be too far away and if they keep forging this many opportunities in games they will inevitably start winning.

So far they have had problems defensively, but this offensive threat means that they are able to compensate for that deficiency somewhat and the three points should start coming if they continue on the same track.

It will be important for the squad not to be get too down over the international break as they are still close to returning to winning ways and if they can start taking some of the numerous chances they will climb the table rapidly as the season progresses.
