Everton face competition from Burnley for Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto.

That is according to a report from The Telegraph.

Everton are thought to be keen on signing Wilfried Gnonto this summer and are already said to have had a bid for him turned down by Leeds.

Last month, the Daily Mail claimed that the Toffees made an unsuccessful £15m offer for the 19-year-old.

The Telegraph states that Everton still have Gnonto on their radar, but Burnley and Vincent Kompany are now also looking at him.

Everton could miss out on Wilfried Gnonto to Burnley

While Burnley have just been promoted to the Premier League, it would not be a shock to see Gnonto choose the Clarets over Everton if he had to pick between the two.

Kompany’s side played some excellent stuff in the Championship last season, which is hardly a surprise given that their manager has worked under the magnificent Pep Guardiola.

Burnley had the highest average ball possession in English football’s second division, which was just over 60% (WhoScored), so they are a team who like to be in control and attack. Gnonto may feel that he would be able to express himself better in such a side.

Of course, there is no guarantee that they will be able to replicate that in the Premier League. Nevertheless, you cannot help but feel that a young attacker like Gnonto, whom Gary Neville has described as a “tenacious” footballer, would rather play under Kompany than a defensive-minded coach like Sean Dyche.

He could be a good addition to an Everton squad who were pretty flat going forward last term, though. In total, the Toffees managed to score just 34 goals in the top flight.

Therefore, if Dyche can add Gnonto or another attacker to his squad before the transfer window closes next month, then he absolutely should.
