Everton sacked manager Ronald Koeman last month – and the search is on for a replacement.
Everton confirmed last month that manager Ronald Koeman has been relieved of his duties after a dreadful start to the season.
The Toffees went into the season full of hope and optimism, having splashed the cash over the summer on players such as Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Davy Klaassen, whilst they also brought Wayne Rooney back to the club.
However, with five defeats in the first nine Premier League games, and just one point taken from the first three Europa League outings, Everton endured a disastrous start to the campaign – and Koeman paid with his job.
Caretaker boss David Unsworth claimed a first win before the international break with a 3-2 victory over Watford, and then claimed a 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
Bookmakers such as Sky Bet have been pricing up odds for Everton’s new manager ever since Koeman’s exit, and here are some of the main names in the frame this evening…
Marco Silva: Evens
Watford boss Silva has been the leading candidate since Everton’s failed approach for his services last Monday, and he put the speculation behind him to beat West Ham 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. However, speculation continues to surround Silva’s future, and he remains the favourite to claim the job at Evens. The 40-year-old has impressed as Watford boss, though some fans are concerned given that he has a relegation on his CV with Hull City.
David Unsworth: 5/2
Caretaker boss Unsworth claimed another point on Saturday afternoon with a 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace, and he remains second favourite for the job tonight. With Everton struggling to land Silva, Unsworth’s chances of landing the job permanently are improving by the day, and the Toffees may be forced to give him the reins on a longer-term basis as a result. At 5/2, Unsworth is very much still in the mix to become Everton boss.
Louis van Gaal: 7/2
A bizarre movement in the market today has seen Louis van Gaal emerge as one of the frontrunners, with his odds suddenly slashed to 7/2. The Dutchman has been out of work since leaving Manchester United in 2016, and few would expect him to return to the Premier League at the age of 66. However, Van Gaal – noted arch-nemesis of former Everton boss Koeman – is now a candidate to replace his compatriot in what would be a shock move.
Tony Pulis: 20/1
Everton aren’t the only Premier League team searching for a new manager, as West Bromwich Albion today sacked manager Tony Pulis after a run of two wins in 21 games. Now, Pulis has immediately been listed as a candidate for Everton, with the Welshman coming in at 20/1. If fans had reservations about appointing Sam Allardyce, then they certainly wouldn’t be on board with Pulis, whose direct and often defensive style of play frustrated West Brom fans.
