Everton are more likely to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff in January than his teammate Allan Saint-Maximin.
That’s according to The Independent, who claim that Longstaff looks a likelier signing than Saint-Maximin as things stand.
Everton are looking to improve in the January window, with Rafael Benitez now looking to raid his former club.
Everton links to Saint-Maximin started last week.
Calciomercato reported that Everton were fighting Chelsea and Liverpool for his signature.
Saint-Maximin was signed at Newcastle after Benitez’s exit, so this wouldn’t be a reunion.
With Longstaff though, Benitez brought him into the Newcastle side and has always been a big fan.
Everton tried a deal for Longstaff over the summer, discussing a swap deal involving Tom Davies.
It makes sense that Benitez and Everton would try again for Longstaff, especially given his contract situation.
Longstaff is out of contract at the end of the season, and Newcastle are running out of time to give him an extension.
If January rolls around with Longstaff’s contract situation unchanged, few would blame the Magpies for cashing in.
That’s a much different situation to Saint-Maximin, who is contracted until the summer of 2026.
Add in the fierce competition for Saint-Maximin and this claim about Longstaff does make some sense. Let’s see if Benitez can finally land his man.
