Everton, Newcastle and Tottenham linked with Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro – only one move looks possible

Atletico Madrid ace Kevin Gameiro has been linked with Everton, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Spanish magazine Don Balon, Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro is wanted by Everton, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Gameiro, 30, has been one of the most impressive strikers in Europe since leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Sevilla in the summer of 2013, having endured a frustrating time at the Parc des Princes.

The Frenchman hit 67 goals in just 144 games for Sevilla, earning himself a 2016 switch to Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid, where he has racked up 20 goals in 56 appearances.

However, given that compatriot Antoine Griezmann is the star attacker at Atletico, and Diego Costa is returning to the club in January, speculation surrounds Gameiro’s future in the Spanish capital.

Spanish magazine Don Balon report that three Premier League clubs – Everton, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur – are all keen to land Gameiro, though it’s immediately worth noting that Don Balon’s record is less than stellar.

Everton have been touted as a possible destination for Gameiro for a couple of months now, and they would make the most sense of three. The Toffees failed to replace Romelu Lukaku after his summer move to Manchester United, and they have shown a willingness to pay big money for proven talent such as Ashley Williams, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Morgan Schneiderlin and Yannick Bolasie.

Newcastle are almost certainly set to pursue another striker in January, and Gameiro would be the proven goalscorer Rafael Benitez craves, but he definitely cannot afford him right now, and would need the club’s takeover to go through to stand any chance of bringing the French international to Tyneside.

Tottenham appear to be the least likely destination. Outside of Fernando Llorente – another striker – in August, Spurs rarely sign players in their 30’s, and given that he is set to be sat behind Costa and Griezmann, Gameiro is unlikely to want to play second fiddle to Harry Kane.

A player of Gameiro’s quality will have a place in the Premier League if Atletico do wish to cash in, but whether any team will actually splash the cash to sign him remains to be seen.
