Everton new boy Dominic Calvert-Lewin has admitted he is surprised by the quality of the players in the club’s under-23 side.

Calvert-Lewin made his first appearance for the team this week, a 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland.

While the loss at Goodison Park was disappointing, on a personal level it was a big milestone for the 19-year-old attacker.

The teenager signed from Sheffield United at the end of the transfer window, after impressing on loan for Northampton Town last season.

Speaking to the club’s media channels, posted on their official Twitter page, Calvert-Lewin spoke about his debut.

He said: “For me personally it was nice to play at Goodison Park, I’d never been here before.

“Pulling the shirt on was strange, nice, I was full of emotions.

Discussing his teammates, he added: “I was surprised, not surprised, but they are even better than what I expected, they are all technically very good. The performance was decent, just lacking a goal.”

Calvert-Lewin had a chance himself to net on his debut, but fired his effort straight at the goalkeeper much to his disappointment.

He will certainly be one to watch this season, although his development is likely to follow the course of Mason Holgate, signed from Barnsley last summer.

Holgate spent last season in the under-21s, now the under-23s, and has made the step up to the first team this season after 12 months acclimatising to his new club.
