Everton are being linked with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro.
Everton desperately need a striker during the January transfer window – and the ideal transfer target may have emerged already.
The Toffees sold Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United in a big-money deal this past summer, but for all their spending on signing such as Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane and Gylfi Sigurdsson, they failed to sign a big-name striker to replace Lukaku.
Oumar Niasse stepped up to score twice against Bournemouth on Saturday, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin has flashed real potential, but Everton lack a proven goalscorer to lead their attack.
This week, The Mirror have reported that Everton have been made aware of the potential of a deal to sign Atletico Madrid attacker Kevin Gameiro in the January transfer window – and he certainly fits the bill.
Gameiro, 30, has been a real goal machine in recent seasons, scoring 67 goals in 144 games for Sevilla before joining Atletico last summer, here he hit 16 goals last season as he continued to find the net.
The French international is now in danger of slipping down the pecking order though, as Atletico have confirmed the signing of Chelsea striker Diego Costa, meaning Gameiro could be available in January.
If Everton have been encouraged to make a move for Gameiro, then the Toffees should be doing everything they can to secure his signature in January, in what would be a major coup for Ronald Koeman’s side.
The diminutive striker may not provide the same focal point that Lukaku did, but he is a proven penalty box poacher, possessing great movement and link-up play as well as the finishing ability which has seen him score so many goals in Spain.
Gameiro may be 30, but Everton have shown they are willing to sign players around that age in Sigurdsson, Ashley Williams and Wayne Rooney, and given his goalscoring record, they should do the same in order to secure Gameiro’s signature in 2018.
