Arsenal have reportedly agreed a deal to bring Steven N’Zonzi back to the Premier League from Sevilla – but Everton must stand in their way.
It seems impossible that Steven N’Zonzi will still be a Sevilla player after the close of the January transfer window.
After a well-publicised fall out with manager Eduardo Berrizzo, the former Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers midfielder made it very clear that he had his heart set on a return to the Premier League with Everton and Arsenal seemingly the frontrunners for his signature.
And with reports in El Gol suggesting that N’Zonzi, who has evolved into one of Europe’s top midfielders in 18 months in La Liga, could cost £35 million meant you could certainly make a case for the recently capped France international being the most impressive Everton signing of the Farhad Moshiri era, per The Sun.
The likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Yannick Bolasie and Michael Keane looked good signings on paper on big fees but N’Zonzi is an established, top level performer who would not be making a step up to Everton but instead dropping down from a side in the Champions League.
And while the likes of Sigurdsson and co haven’t quite made the required impact, N’Zonzi has the authority and the all-round skill-set to immediately and dramatically improve Everton’s starting XI – which is not something you could say for most of the new players brought to Goodison Park in Moshiri’s reign.
However, reports emerging from El Gol today state that Arsenal have instead agreed a deal to sign N’Zonzi for £35 million in the January transfer window – meaning Everton now face missing out on pulling off a brilliant deal.
And with Arsenal far better placed in the Premier League than the struggling Toffees, it remains to be seen whether they can still harbour any hopes of pulling off a deal.
But with N’Zonzi potentially capable of taking Everton to the next level, they should not accept defeat just yet.
