The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was on Everton’s radar, according to reports.
Toffees boss Ronald Koeman has spent well in excess of £100 million during the summer transfer window thus far, and his business is by no means finished yet.
A report emanating from France today claims that the Dutchman made a formal approach to Spurs over this past week, in an attempt to take Moussa Sissoko on loan for the season, according to L’Equipe.
The proposal was subsequently rejected, however, with Daniel Levy adamant that he will only entertain a permanent offer for the Frenchman, and Everton should consider it as a lucky escape.

The 27-year-old France international was woeful fro Tottenham last season, registering just two assists and zero goals in 25 Premier League outings for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
It was Sissoko’s form for Newcastle during the 2015/16 campaign that convinced the Lilywhites to part with £30 million to sign him last summer, but it was quite clear that the former Toulouse man was just a big fish in a small pond at St James’ Park.
And with the Blues now pushing for a place inside the Champions League, it is questionable whether he would add anything to what Koeman already has on offer at Goodison Park.
Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin are far superior to the Spurs man, when playing in the middle of the park, and there is no way that he would usurp Davy Klaassen in the more advanced midfield role.
The Merseyside outfit will undoubtedly be better served in targeting players who can really make an impact during games, because they must now be considered amongst the Premier League’s elite clubs, after-all.
If the report is to believed, and Everton did in fact miss out on Sissoko, Koeman and co should look at it as a lucky escape, and move on with their player recruitment.
Tottenham, on the other hand, seem to be stuck with the Frenchman, for the time being at least.
