HITC Sport understands the Everton midfielder is set for Championship loan move.
Liverpool’s Joao Teixeira (R) is tackled by Everton’s Joe Williams
Everton midfielder Joe Williams is poised to join Barnsley on a season-long loan deal, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Williams is highly-rated at Everton having come through the ranks at Goodison Park and he was handed a new contract until 2020 in February.
The 20-year-old has seen his progress interupted by injury in the past two seasons, but he battled back to fitness last season and helped Everton’s Under-23s win the Premier League 2 title.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman
Former England Under-20 international Williams is highly thought of by Ronald Koeman and he was named in some of his first-team squads last term.
With Everton bringing in a number of new players this summer Williams’ first-team opportunities look limited for next season and the club feel it would be best in the next stage of his development to go out out loan.
A number of Championship clubs have enquired about taking Williams on loan, but Barnsley have moved quickly to agree a deal with Everton for the midfielder.
Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom is a long-term admirer of Williams and he sees him as being a key addition to his plans next season at Oakwell.
