Everton midfielder James McCarthy is believed to still be on Newcastle United’s wishlist.
Everton midfielder James McCarthy’s comments to the Chronicle, after a proposed move to Newcastle United fell through in January, may offer hope to Rafael Benitez’s side that they will be more successful, should they submit a repeat bid.
Benitez is said to have maintained an interest in McCarthy (The Telegraph), despite missing out on him a few months ago.
And with Newcastle said to be lining up a bid for the Republic of Ireland international, his comments back in January make for interesting reading.
“The manager came out and said I’m not for sale and I’m part of his plans and I’m happy enough here,” McCarthy revealed, after Newcastle’s interest was first noted.
“I want to play games and I want to be involved as much as I can and I think that’s within the squad.
“Every other player wants to play as much as they can and I’m no different. Hopefully between now and the end of the season I can play as many games as I can.”
McCarthy’s wish for more game time at Everton has not come true, meaning he is likely to be looking for an exit this summer.
McCarthy appears to have frustrated Koeman, after getting injured on international duty.
The combative midfielder insisted he was fit to play for Ireland, but picked up an injury, as he rushed his recovery process.
As a result, McCarthy has played for Everton on just six occasions since January – with only one of these appearances being as a starter.
And Koeman’s reluctance to play McCarthy in the second part of the season, may just play into Newcastle’s hands this summer.
