Sky Sports’ Bundesliga commentator perhaps said it best. Maximilian Beier, after spinning away from another defender and finishing off a superb solo goal which showcased every one of his best assets, is proving himself to be a centre-forward of ‘frightening potential’.

The number speak for themselves.

In just six Bundesliga starts – eight appearances in total – the Hoffenheim whizzkid has found the net six times already in 2023/24. Beier passes the eye test too. As the Eintracht Frankfurt backline will no doubt attest to, Beier opening the scoring with a goal of power and finesse, the Brandenberg-born battering ram possesses so many of the attributes the German national team have been crying out for since the Miroslav Klose heyday, from his electric movement to his physical prowess, right the way down to his dead-eyed finishing.

Germany have paid the price for a lack of a truly elite-level number nine during a handful of dreadful tournament performances, and they are not the only striker-starved outfit taking a close eye at Beier’s breakthrough season at Hoffenheim.

Everton are interested, according to BILD. News of Beier agreeing a new deal at Hoffenheim – complete with a release clause presumably larger than the old one of £17 million – are an early blow to the Toffees’ hopes, however, particularly with the youngster explaining that he feels his current employers are providing the ideal platform for him to develop further.

“Maxi is currently one of the rising stars of German football, and we are pleased that we are able to make a groundbreaking decision with him and extend his contract early for another two years,” says managing director Alexander Rosen, Beier now tied down until 2027.

“He is another prime example of the ‘Hoffenheim way’. With his incredible willingness, as well as his courageous and extremely refreshing style of play, he has a great future ahead of him.

“Maxi is an extremely fast striker who can not only cause danger on the offensive at any time, but can also constantly stress the opponent in his build-up play due to his aggressive approach,” explains Pirmin Schwegler, head of professional football at TSG.

“Maxi wants to learn new things every day. We will have a lot of fun with him in the future.”

New contract signed

Beier, reportedly under consideration for a maiden call-up by new national team boss Julian Nagelsmann, could be Germany’s number nine for years to come. But for Everton too? That new contract suggests that the Toffees supporters, unlike Nagelsmann, will have to wait to see Beier’s talents up close.
