Everton signed one centre-back this summer but should have bought a second.

Big spending Everton have had mixed success with their summer additions so far, but Michael Keane is one player who does appear to be a good buy.

Unfortunately Keane has been let down by some poor displays from teammate Ashley Williams, who is showing that at 33, he could be on a downwards spiral.

With Rafa Funes Mori picking up a serious injury, Everton’s failure to buy another centre-back is looking like a potential mistake.

One player who would have been perfect for them is Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles.

The former Nottingham Forest talent is 23, and has made a strong impression at Newcastle over the past two seasons.

But in the summer with Newcastle eyeing up defensive targets, a big money bid from Everton could have tempted the Toon into a sale.

Now there is no chance of the Toffees doing a deal, with Lascelles signing a new contract last week tying his future to the club until 2023.

Everton will have to look at another option, but had they signed Lascelles, they could have formed a defensive partnership with Keane which would have had the potential to succeed for club and country for years to come.
