Everton and West Ham United are listed as contenders to sign both players, with Newcastle United also in the mix for Smalling.

Everton have been made favourites and second favourites to sign Manchester United defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, with West Ham United also listed as contenders for the pair’s signatures and Newcastle United in the mix for Smalling.

Bookmaker Ladbrokes has opened a market on the England duo’s next clubs as they continue to struggle for form under Jose Mourinho.

Everton are as short as 11/10 to take Smalling off Manchester United’s hands, with West Ham, Newcastle [both 2/1] and Arsenal [3/1] close behind.

Arsenal, though, are the front runners of Jones [evens], ahead of Everton [5/2] and West Ham [6/1].

Everton could be in the market for at least one new centre-half this summer, with Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams well into their thirties now.

Incidentally, the Toffees – whose manager, Sam Allardyce, included Smalling in his one and only England squad – are one of the clubs said to have taken an interest in Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles [Chronicle].

West Ham are not currently short of central defenders, but could lose Jose Fonte to China [Daily Record] while James Collins is out of contract this summer.
