The Toffees ace described the Goodison Park home crowd as their 12th player and urged them to keep being behind the team.
Speaking ahead of Everton’s Premier League home game against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, Lucas Digne spoke about a number of topics including his teammates and the club’s fans, namely the home support at Goodison Park.
The 25-year-old joined the Toffees from Barcelona in August 2018 on a five-year deal for £18.1million (Transfermarkt) and made his debut on 11 August 2018 in the last four minutes of a 2–2 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers (BBC Sport).
Over the course of the season, Digne has developed a great understanding with fellow summer arrival Bernard, the two overlapping on the left wing, and speaking to the Everton website, he hailed the Brazilian as an “amazing” and “very intelligent” player.
The conversation then moved onto the subject of the Everton fanbase, and with the club currently undergoing a bit of a tough time on the pitch, he hailed the fans, saying how they played an especially big role in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool.
The Frenchman said: “The atmosphere during the derby was exceptional and I hope it will be against Chelsea, too. It is really important for us. We feel the people behind us and you want to give more, more and more. If you are tired, you give more, you say, ‘I can’t be tired, the people are looking at me’.
“We are playing with 12 players when it is like that inside Goodison. It is so important they are behind us. And the most important thing is to stay together like this and continue in a positive way.”
Digne, who is contracted to the Toffees until 2023, has made 29 appearances in all competitions, of which 27 in the Premier League, and in those he has scored three goals and four assists, according to Transfermarkt.
