Former Liverpool star John Aldridge has written in The Sunday World that Everton should not appoint Rafael Benitez as the club’s new manager.
What’s the story?
Everton are looking for a new manager.
Carlo Ancelotti left for his former club Real Madrid earlier this month.
The Athletic has reported that former Liverpool manager Benitez is the leading candidate to take over at the Toffees.
The Spaniard has held talks with Everton owner Farhad Moshiri.
The former Madrid boss is Moshiri’s ‘favourite’ to take the job and could be appointed in the role.
BBC Sport has reported that the former Chelsea interim-manager could be offered the job.
What’s been said?
Former Liverpool star Aldridge does not think that Benitez would be a good fit for Everton.
In his column in The Sunday World, Aldridge has made the point quite strongly.
Aldridge wrote: “Everton are flirting with the idea of appointing Rafael Benitez as their new manager, and my advice to them could not be clearer – don’t do it.
“The prospect of a former Liverpool manager taking over at Goodison Park will send a shiver down the spine of many Evertonians, and some of my blue nose friends are not happy about it.”
The former Liverpool man added: “Rafa will always be a Red and even though he has made Liverpool his home and I’m sure he would love the Everton job, he is not the right fit for them.
“He would stabilise Everton, get them into the top half of the table next season and might even get them near a Cup final, but the style of football he promotes and the way he does things is not to everyone’s liking.”

Rafael Benitez to Everton?
Benitez was the manager of Liverpool from 2004 until 2010.
The Reds won the Champions League and the FA Cup under him.
Everton fans know how successful a manager Benitez is, but some are not happy that the club could appoint him.
After all, Everton and Liverpool are bitter Merseyside rivals.
