Everton want Jonathan David with Frank Lampard and co seemingly eyeing up an ambitious move for the Lille striker during the January window.

The Toffees had to bring in attacking reinforcements over the summer having sold Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur.

Neal Maupay was Everton’s only striking addition though and the Frenchman has scored just once in his five appearances for the Toffees.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is back from injury but whether he can be relied upon moving forward remains to be seen.

Everton may therefore need to go for another striker in January and an ambitious move is now being targeted.

Everton want Jonathan David

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Everton are ‘very interested’ in signing Lille hitman Jonathan David.

It’s suggested that no offer has been submitted yet and Everton may actually be wasting their time by targeting him.

Plettenberg claims that David only wants to join one of top 12 European clubs and Everton are a long, long way from that right now.

That would suggest that David is eyeing up the Premier League’s top six then one of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, PSG and then a team like Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan or Atletico Madrid.

Everton surely can’t compete with those clubs and David is valued at more than €50million (£44million).

Everton did though beat lofty competition to sign Amadou Onana in a big-money summer move, and he ironically arrived from Lille.

The Toffees seemingly fancy repeating the trick with a move for David but their hopes appear to be slim at best.

David, 22, has already smashed nine goals in 11 games this season after hitting 15 goals in 38 outings last season.

The striker is set to play at the World Cup in Qatar and will be one of Canada’s main hopes as they look to surprise on the world’s biggest stage.

David may well pick up more interest there and he has already been called a ‘phenomenon’ by former coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck.

Compared to Luis Suarez, David appears set for stardom and Everton may find that this is a tough deal to pull off.
