Jamie Carragher may have laid into Everton’s back line but Micah Richards has indicating he wouldn’t go as far to say they’re Championship standard.
At half-time of Everton’s 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur last week, Carragher made his feelings known about Everton’s back line.
Carragher suggested that Everton’s back line was Championship standard, picking out Seamus Coleman for particular criticism.
The back four that night was Jonjoe Kenny, Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Coleman; none of them could cope with Tottenham.
Kenny was sent off against Wolves on Sunday, with Everton falling to another defeat, leaving them edging closer and closer to relegation.
Dropping into the Championship – where the Everton back line belongs according to Carragher – would be an absolute disaster for the Toffees.
Frank Lampard faces a real battle in his attempts to keep Everton in the Premier League, with the squad in need of a complete overhaul.
Amid such strong criticism, pundit Richards has now given his verdict on the Everton defence – and doesn’t quite agree with Carragher.
Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live’s Monday Night Club, Richards suggested that he wouldn’t offer such a strong criticism on the Everton back line as Carragher and many others.

Richards does believe there are some good players in the Everton side, but they just haven’t found rhythm or a consistent system.
Many managers have chopped and changed at the back, switching Everton from a four-man defence to a five or a three, with Richards believing the Toffees need some consistency.
“I know people have said that Everton’s back line is a ‘Championship defence’, I wouldn’t go as strong as that,” said Richards. “I think there are some good players in there, I don’t know if they’ve found the right rhythm and whether they should play four at the back, five at the back or a three,” he added.
It’s now down to Lampard to find the answers to Everton’s defensive problems, or we could be seeing the Toffees playing Championship football next season and leave Carragher somewhat justified in his verdict.
