Fabio Cannavaro is set to take over at Serie B outfit Benevento after holding talks with Everton about a move to the Premier League prior to Frank Lampard’s appointment as Toffees manager, according to Gianluca di Marzio.
‘Great players don’t make great managers’.
Well, Lampard and Cannavaro are certainly hoping to put that particular cliché to bed; two of the most iconic footballers of the 21st century swapping their studs for suits.
Lampard kept Everton safe from the drop last term and, despite waiting until Sunday to secure their first win of the new Premier League season, appears to have constructed a far more dogged, diligent squad to the one which underachieved so spectacularly under Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez.

Cannavaro, meanwhile, is set to for his first managerial role in Europe after winning three trophies in five years over China. Per Gianluca di Marzio, Italy’ 2006 World Cup-winning captain should sign a two-year deal at Serie B outfit Benevento this week.
Sitting 13th after just six games, Cannavaro will certainly have to wave some magic over The Sorcerers if he is to spark about an immediate upturn.
Everton held talks with Fabio Cannavaro before hiring Frank Lampard
“I met the owner (Farhad Moshiri),” Cannavaro told The Telegraph a couple of months ago; admitting that he had held talks with Everton following the sacking of Benitez in January.
“I explained to him my philosophy, my strategy. B, t of course it’s understandable when you have the opportunity to take Lampard. (He) knows better than me, maybe, the Premier League.
“Maybe (people) think that I don’t know the league, that I don’t have experience in Europe. But it’s football. I know what is happening in clubs, in the changing rooms.
“But, no, I was proud that Everton and Watford, also, asked me to have an interview. I really appreciate that.”
