Does Everton interest in Lacroix hint that Williams could be going?

Everton are keen on signing St Etienne’s Leo Lacroix, currently on loan at Basel, so could that signal the end of Ashley Williams’ Toffees career?

Everton are considering a move for Saint-Etienne defender Leo Lacroix, according to the Irish Sun, who is currently on loan at Basel.

The Swiss champions have the option to buy Lacroix themselves, although the Toffees and Brighton and Hove Albion are considering entering the race for the 26-year-old – who is valued at around £7.5m.

It is believed manager Sam Allardyce wants more support in central defence, so could that mean the end of the line for someone currently in the position at the club?

Sports Illustrated recently speculated that the red card Ashley Williams recently received during the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Burnley could signal the end of his career at Goodison Park.

One dismissal doesn’t define a player, but this is the latest problem in what has largely been a disappointing season for Williams, who has failed to impress on the pitch and showed a similar lack of discipline against Lyon in the Europa League earlier in the campaign.

Michael Keane has also been disappointing but was a £30m (BBC) signing from the Clarets only last summer so the Merseysiders will probably persist with him, while Mason Holgate has developed well and captain Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes Mori have only recently returned from injury.

That leaves Williams as the fall guy should Lacroix arrive and in truth, few fans would probably be unhappy to see the 33-year-old leave.
