Everton are in talks to sign James Garner from Premier League giants Manchester United with the midfielder expected to cost around £14 million, as reported by The Athletic.
With deals for Idrissa Gana Gueye and Mohamed Kudus hitting the buffers, Frank Lampard and co are looking closer to home for midfield reinforcements. And Garner, who was left out of Erik Ten Hag’s squad for Monday’s inspired 2-1 victory over North West neighbours Liverpool, appears to have emerged as a leading candidate heading into the final week of the transfer window.
The Athletic say that talks between Everton and Manchester United are underway.
Garner also has admirers at Southampton, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur. Nottingham Forest have also shown an interest in bringing him back to the City Ground after an impressive loan spell.
Everton, however, can offer Garner the chance to hone his talents under one of the finest midfielders of the 21st century; a bonafide Premier League legend in Frank Lampard. His excellent passing range and intelligence on the ball would also come in handy. Particularly at a Toffees side lacking a dash of guile in the centre of the park.
Garner’s arrival would offset the departure of Dele Alli to Besiktas.
Everton now in talks to sign Manchester United’s James Garner
“He’s very good technically and he likes to dictate the play,” former United captain Roy Keane told ITV during Forest’s exhilarating FA Cup run last term, Garner playing a key role as Steve Cooper’s side knocked out both Arsenal and Leicester City before running Liverpool close.
The 21-year-old’s quality from set-pieces, meanwhile, led to comparisons with one Old Trafford hero.
“James Garner’s deliveries remind me of David Beckham’s,” adds former England international Trevor Sinclair (talkSPORT).
“He’s got that dip and that whip and it causes so many problems. The pace on the ball, he’s putting it on a sixpence every time. It’s an absolutely phenomenal cross that he’s got in the locker.”
