Everton have been given fresh hope in their pursuit of Ajax striker Kasper Dolberg after the Dutch side signed his potential replacement.

Ajax confirmed a deal to sign free agent Klaas-Jan Huntelaar yesterday, The BBC reported, with his Schalke contract coming to an end.

The 33-year-old is looking to relaunch his career with his former club and win the league title with them, having missed out on doing so as a youngster.

His return to the club gives Ajax a ready made replacement for prodigious talent Kasper Dolberg, who netted 23 goals in all competitions this season.

The Liverpool Echo reported last month that Everton are hopeful they can sign the 19-year-old, having been impressed by his form and potential.

Dolberg may have disappointed in the Europa League final, but he managed to score six goals in 10 starts in the competition, netting both home and away in the semi-finals with Lyon.

Huntelaar’s presence at Ajax will now make the Dutch side more comfortable cashing in on the forward if an acceptable bid is put forward.

The ball is now in Everton’s court.
