Everton hopeful of club-record deal – but Gylfi Sigurdsson won’t solve one of Koeman’s biggest problems

Everton are reportedly poised to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City.

According to The Mirror, Everton are hopeful of tying up a blockbuster deal to sign Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson by the weekend.

The Toffees have already splashed the cash on the likes of Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramriez and Wayne Rooney, but the biggest deal yet looks to be drawing closer and closer.

Everton have been pushing to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City this summer, with The Mirror now claiming that the Toffees are hopeful of completing a swoop for the Icelandic international before the weekend.

It’s noted that Everton failed with £40million and £45million bids to sign Sigurdsson, and any agreement could be close to £50million as Everton prepare to break their transfer record for the ex-Spurs star.

Sigurdsson, who bagged nine goals and 13 assists in the Premier League last season, looks to be a smart signing for Everton, bringing creativity, a major goal threat front midfield and pinpoint accuracy from set pieces.

However, Sigurdsson won’t solve one of Koeman’s biggest problems in his Everton squad, and that’s a lack of pace in the final third from proven players.

Additions like Klaassen, Rooney and now Sigurdsson will make Everton incredibly narrow, given that Ronald Koeman also has to fit Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin into his team, with all five players preferring to work centrally.

Sigurdsson could play from the left, but that is not his best position, and may well be a real waste of his talents given that Everton are paying around £50million to bring him to Goodison Park.

Koeman can call upon Ramirez for movement and suddenness in attack, whilst inexperienced Ademola Lookman can also bring speed, but there is a real danger of Everton being a little too one-paced going forward if Sigurdsson is added to the likes of Klaassen and Rooney.

Landing a player like Leicester City’s Demarai Gray could solve that issue in Koeman’s side, but with so much money being spent on Sigurdsson, there may not be much left for Koeman to spend on another player with pace, leaving the Everton boss without his answer to Sadio Mane, who was so important to the now-Toffees manager Koeman at Southampton – and Premier League defences will be pleased with that, with question marks over the speed out wide for Everton entering the new season.
