Everton and Tottenham both competed to sign Moussa Sissoko in the summer.
There were plenty of grins at Tottenham Hotspur late on transfer deadline day as they hijacked Everton’s move for Moussa Sissoko.
Spurs paid a reported £30 million fee for the Newcastle United midfielder, but are yet to see him make a meaningfully positive contribution for the team.
Tottenham’s Moussa Sissoko waits to come on as a substitute
Everton are just three points behind Tottenham in the Premier League table, and are not missing Sissoko, who has been played out on the wing by Mauricio Pochettino.
In that regard, Tottenham would have been far better off spending their £30 million on a player Everton had already paid up for, Yannick Bolasie.
| Team | Assists | Goals | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yannick Bolasie | Everton | 4 | 1 |
| Moussa Sissoko | Tottenham | 0 | 0 |
While Everton are learning that Bolasie is far from the complete player, and has his up’s along with his down’s, he has had his moments, and caused difficulty for opposing defences.
Bolasie possesses speed, trickery, and willingness to take players on, and this is an element sorely lacking from Tottenham’s game in recent weeks.
Everton’s Yannick Bolasie celebrates scoring
Spurs have scored just two goals in open play from five games since October 1, compared to Chelsea who have netted 12 in that same period.
Bolasie’s Everton have struck four in that time, but he has been integral to their play, scoring one and providing two assists since October 1.
With him stretching the play, Vincent Janssen may not have looked so isolated up front, and of the two players to spend £30 million on, it appears Everton got the better deal.
