Everton have been going through a difficult stretch lately.
David Moyes’ men have only managed one victory in their last seven matches across all competitions, and are still seeking their first win of 2026.
Everton go into the match against Aston Villa this afternoon sitting in the bottom half of the table.
As a result, Moyes has come under pressure from fans who feel Everton should be closer to the European places, especially after spending over £100m during the summer transfer window.
On top of that, an Everton legend has now put himself forward for the role if Moyes is dismissed by the Friedkin Group.
Wayne Rooney open to taking over at Everton if David Moyes departs
While speaking on the BBC’s Football Focus, Wayne Rooney addressed the recent developments at Manchester United and suggested he would be open to a role there following Michael Carrick’s appointment.
Rooney also mentioned that he would be interested in a position at Everton if the opportunity ever presented itself.
“I said last week, if Manchester United called me and asked me to go in any capacity, then I’d gladly do that. It’s a club which for myself I love the football club and I was there for 13 years.”
The former forward added: “It’s probably one of the only two clubs I would go back into coaching for, in Manchester United and Everton.”
Moyes is not expected to leave his post soon, but with only 18 months remaining on his contract, he still has work to do to secure an extension.
Wayne Rooney’s most recent job as a manager
Rooney’s most recent managerial role was with Plymouth Argyle in the Championship, but it did not go well.
Plymouth dismissed him in late 2024 after a difficult run that left the club bottom of the league. Before that, he had a tough spell at Birmingham City as well.
There were also rumours about him possibly taking part in a Misfits boxing event, but nothing has come of those talks so far.
Since then, Rooney has been working as a pundit and appears interested in returning to football management with either Manchester United or Everton.
