Everton should look to Aston Villa to finally replace Ross Barkley this summer.

Everton have endured a topsy turvy season with Ronald Koeman axed and Sam Allardyce appointed his replacement after a long running saga to find a successor while Villa are in the mix for promotion – most likely via the play-offs – in the Championship.

Now sitting comfortably in midtable but with little other than pride to play for in the remaining 11 games, the Toffees have time to take stock and identify where things went wrong in what was expected to be an exciting season.

Much of the blame has been placed on the club’s failure to bolster their attacking options sufficiently in the summer after the departure of Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley.

While midtable mediocrity is not what Everton fans were hoping for this season, it does give the club the distinct advantage of planning ahead in terms of recruitment for next season.

With January signing Cenk Tosun starting to look the real deal the club will be focused on strengthening their defence and playmaking options this summer.

And if Aston Villa fail to get promoted from the Championship they should finally look to replace Barkley by moving for Jack Grealish after the player told Sky Sports he needs to be playing Premier League football.

“I think for me, to put myself up there, I need to be doing it in the biggest league which is probably the Premier League,” Grealish told Sky Sports.

“So that is my aim to get this club back to the Premier League.

“Hopefully next season I can do what I’m doing in the Premier League.”

Villa could be forced to sell a number of stars if they do not get promoted this season with Premier League parachute payments coming to an end and the need to adhere to Financial Fair Play regulations.

And the Toffees could pick up a bargain while Allardyce likes to have a British core to his squads.
