Everton given David Moyes claim by Shkodran Mustafi in relegation verdict

Shkodran Mustafi feels Everton have too much ‘quality’ to endure relegation from the Premier League this season.

But the one-time Toffees defender also believes their problems date back to the departure of David Moyes in May 2013.

Manchester United signed Moyes to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford following the tactician’s storied tenure at Goodison Park.

Going to Manchester United did not work out for Moyes in the end. The Red Devils sacked the Scottish coach just 10 months into a six-year contract.

But Moyes left Everton after 11 years having overseen consistently strong Premier League campaigns throughout his tenure on Merseyside.

Mustafi feels Everton’s issues started to build when Moyes left

Mustafi played for Everton under Moyes from 2009 to 2012 after joining as a youth. He has since gone on to play for Sampdoria, Valencia, Arsenal, Schalke and now, Levante.

The German still keeps tabs on the Toffees and feels Everton’s squad is too good to endure relegation from the Premier League this season.

But Everton’s problems extend off the pitch and Mustafi feels their issues started to mount following Moyes’ departure a decade ago.

“It’s been a long time since I was at Everton,” Mustafi has told Sky Germany. “But I always follow what the club is doing, which players or coaches they sign.

“Since the departure of David Moyes, there is a feeling that the club has lost continuity and stability. Everton have always struggled in recent years.

“But I think the quality of the team is so high that they won’t be relegated.”

Everton will hope their issues do not come home to roost

Everton are battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League for the second successive season this term.

Frank Lampard only guided the Toffees to safety on the penultimate day last season with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Crystal Palace.

Yet Lampard’s tenure at Everton failed to pick up this season and Sean Dyche now has the task of keeping Everton afloat.

But Everton are now without a win in six fixtures to reside inside the relegation zone with five matches remaining.

Dyche has further only won three of his 13 Premier League games in charge of Everton yet. While the Goodison club have only scored 10 goals to 22 conceded under his watch.

So, the Toffees will hope their 10 years of mounting problems do not come home to roost.
