Van Dijk has impressed since joining Liverpool in January.
Everton flop Davy Klaassen has been quoted by Goal as saying that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the world, as he continues to shine for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The 27-year-old moved to Liverpool in January for a huge £75million fee from Southampton, and has gone from strength to strength at Anfield – finally solving the leak at the back.
Even this season, van Dijk has helped Liverpool keep eight clean sheets in 16 league and cup outings. His presence, leadership and no-nonsense approach to defending has given the Reds all the tools required to rival Man City.
Klaassen, who moved to Everton for £25million in the summer of 2017 before leaving to join Werder Bremen in the summer after failing to make an impact, reckons van Dijk is one of the best in the world.
“It is hard to mention one best defender in the world but he is one of the best,” Klaassen said. “He is in the top 10 for sure. He’s so big and so good. I think he plays so well every week for Liverpool.
“With the national team he is the captain now, so he is really important for Holland.”
The Netherlands international has formed a superb partnership with Joe Gomez at centre-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back and Andy Robertson at left-back.
Van Dijk is in action on Monday night in a crucial UEFA Nations League clash against Germany. A win for Holland sees them leapfrog France into the semi-finals of the competition, but anything less and the French qualify alongside Switzerland, England and Portugal.
