Everton are set to take on Liverpool at Anfield in the Merseyside derby tomorrow.

Ronald Koeman has insisted to Everton’s official Periscope page that he does not understand why his side have previously been ‘fearful’ of facing Liverpool.

Koeman accused Everton of playing with trepidation in the Merseyside derby, during Roberto Martinez’s time at the club.

And the Dutch boss does not understand why Everton have seemingly showed nerves when taking on their city rivals.

“I heard a little bit in the last two seasons, maybe Everton have been a bit afraid to play against Liverpool,” he said. “But why you need to be afraid to play against Liverpool, I don’t understand that.”

Everton have taken on Liverpool once during Koeman’s time in charge so far, and they were beaten 1-0.

The Toffees managed to hold firm for much of the contest, but were undone when Sadio Mane netted a late winner.

At that stage, Everton were still adapting to life under Koeman – but they appear to be a much improved team now.

Everton have lost just once in the Premier League in 2017, and they are starting to catch Liverpool.

If the Toffees could win at Anfield, they would close the gap on Jurgen Klopp’s side to just three points.
