The Everton midfielder didn’t cover himself in glory on his first start of the season.

Everton bounced back from a demoralising defeat by Sheffield United last week by beating their local rivals in the Carabao Cup.
The Blades beat Marco Silva’s side 2-0 at Goodison Park this past weekend, but the Toffees responded well by edging out Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough to reach the fourth round.
An early double from Dominic Calvert-Lewin was enough to alleviate some pressure on the Everton manager, but not all fans were happy last night.
Tom Davies, in particular, looked rather shaky on what was his first start of the season under the Portuguese manager.
Jordan Pickford spared his team-mate’s blushes on one occasion when a loose pass from Davies led to Sam Winnall going through one-on-one with the Everton keeper, but he kept Winnall out.
It was a clear sign of rust from the Finch Farm product, who had only 11 minutes of football all season prior to last night. Here’s how fans of the Merseyside club reacted to his performance:
Silva clearly has a lot of faith in the 21-year-old, whom he tipped as a potential future captain last season [The Echo].
But he obviously needs more game time, though where it’ll come from after last night remains to be seen.
