Marco Silva has described Everton’s performance in their Premier League loss to Manchester City as a “strong response” to their last home game, the 3-1 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Toffees went into Wednesday night’s game against the Citizens in poor form, having lost six of their last 10 Premier League games (TWTD) and out of the FA Cup at the hands of Championship side Millwall.
In contrast, Pep Guardiola’s charges were buoyed by the prospect of dealing a double blow on Merseyside in dethroning Liverpool at the top of the league table, and as it turned out, the visitors ended up running out 2-0 winners.
Silva made some big changes as he dropped top scorers Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson to the bench and switched to a 4-3-3 formation, the brave moves yielding a much-improved performance, albeit against a very strong Man City side.
Speaking after the game, the Portuguese told the official Everton media channel, as shared on their Twitter page: “It was a strong response to our last home match. i think we deserved something more, but that is football.”
After praising the fans for their support at the game, something the players needed, he added: “It was a good performance, players had a very good attitiude, we can take many positives.”
Reaction by the Toffees faithful on Twitter was mixed, with some appreciating Silva’s comments and the players’ display, and some taking a more sceptical view given yet another negative result:
