Brands is keen on emphasising the Toffees’ “One Club” ethos and thinks Gomes, who has joined Goodison Park permanently, is a fine example.

Everton Director of Football Marcel Brands speaks to the media during a press conference at USM Finch Farm on June 4, 2018 in Halewood, England.

A number of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to praise Marcel Brands for his comments following Andre Gomes’s permanent switch to the Premier League outfit from Barcelona.

The Portuguese midfielder, who impressed during his season on loan at Goodison Park, has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Toffees in a £22million deal (official Everton website).

Gomes initially joined Everton on a season-long loan from Camp Nou on transfer deadline day in August 2018 and although he had to recover from a hamstring injury first, it did not take long for him to win over the Blues faithful as he began turning out for Marco Silva’s side.

The 29-cap Portugal international made his Everton debut in a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace in October 2018 at Goodison Park and went on to make a total of 29 appearances, scoring one goal.

As well as his efforts on the pitch, he was just as impressive off it, taking part in numerous community events such as holding a hug-a-thon with fans to raise money for Everton in the Community’s proposed mental health facility and buying a young Toffees fan a club jacket and scarf when he noticed he was cold during a bus tour.

“It’s the People’s Club and players have to feel at home here,” Brands told the official club website. “That’s so important and Andre was a big example, like players such as [Yerry] Mina and [Lucas] Digne, who immediately felt at home.

“That was the case with Andre even though he was on loan. That feeling is important and it helps me a lot. The fans show appreciation to a player and that means a lot to them. The fans are happy and I’m also happy with them for their support in this deal.”
