Everton got the penultimate Premier League matchday of 2018-19 under way with a vital victory in their hopes of clinching Europa League football, beating Burnley 2-0 in their last Goodison Park game of the season on Friday night.

The hosts went ahead in the 17th minute as a Richarlison shot was diverted into the net by Clarets defender Ben Mee, and just three minutes later Seamus Coleman headed home on the rebound from Tom Heaton’s save.

Sean Dyche’s charges were improved in the second half, mustering their first shot on target just before the hour and Johann Berg Gudmundsson having a good opportunity a few minutes later, but they were unable to get through the Everton defence.

A season which has blown hot and cold for Everton fans is now finishing on a high as the Toffees have won four successive home games as well as edging above Leicester City into eighth spot ahead of their game against Manchester City on Monday night.

Idrissa Gueye put in a superb performance for the Merseysiders against Burnley, his relentless tackling and energy in closing down the opposition’s forays making a huge impact, his display getting a rating of 8 by the Liverpool Echo.

Here is how some Everton fans reacted on Twitter to the 29-year-old’s display:
