The Toffees put in a lacklustre performance in last week’s Premier League defeat and are looking ahead to Saturday’s Goodison Park clash.
A number of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Seamus Coleman’s comments following the Toffees’ meek 3-1 Premier League defeat away at Bournemouth at the weekend (official club website) and the general consensus seemed to be a case of ‘heard it all before’.
Everton put in a poor defensive performance at the Vitality Stadium as they shipped three goals, Callum Wilson netting a brace either side of Ryan Fraser’s 67th-minute effort, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal on the stroke of half time proving little more than a consolation in the end.
The result meant that Everton have conceded seven goals across their last three league games, as many as they had in their previous 13 Premier League fixtures before this (Opta Stats via Sky Sports) and Coleman acknowledged that the Toffees must do better when Sheffield United visit Goodison Park this weekend.
“When you put on the Everton shirt – whether you are old or young – you have to take responsibility, to be brave and look for the ball at all times and help your teammates,” he told the Everton website. “Not many of us could hold our heads high coming off the pitch and that’s the truth.
“Our home form is good but away from home at the minute it is disappointing and something we need to put right very fast if we want to be better this season. We have to go into the Sheffield United game… and hopefully get three points and move forward and try to put it right.”
The Irishman’s comments were not particularly well received by quite a few Everton fans, who seem to have lost patience with the inconsistent displays that have ended up costing points, and some took to social media to voice their disgruntlement:
Coleman has been on the books at Everton since 2009 and is contracted to the Toffees until the summer of 2022 (Transfermarkt) on a reported £70,000-per-week deal (Spotrac), with 294 senior appearances under his belt (Transfermarkt).
